I made the “decision” on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 after 35 years with the same organization. I decided I was going to retire and the timing could not have been better. I was ready, 35 years is a long time. So now what? What is my next step, my ensuing chapter, my second act? In my new life as a retiree, when I now have the gift, the time and the freedom to do whatever I wish, it was the perfect time to examine, question and determine my encore career.
My entire professional life had been dedicated to the service of others. I have a passion for servant leadership. So it made sense that I somehow continue on that path. That is why I launched 2NDACTLIVES™. In the over 40 years I worked in financial services I saw the issues baby boomers faced as they planned for and entered the retirement phase of their lives.
My career had been devoted to training financial advisors to assist individuals in preparing for the financial side of their retirement. But as I spoke to folks from all types of backgrounds and from every economic group and every region of the country, I discovered the issues of retirement go beyond merely accumulating enough in your savings and investments.
As a baby boomer you could spend 20 years or more in retirement so what will you do? How will you fill your time? Why will you join in and participate? What pursuits will enrich your “retired” life? We want to assist and guide you through that process by not only finding activities to fill your time but are fulfilling and rewarding as well. And we won’t be doing it alone. Our goal is to build a community of second act people we can all draw upon for ideas and inspiration.
We also have a vision of aiding you in sharing this amazing life you live with your family. To capture your memories, stories, experiences and values as a keepsake and a guidebook for future generations. How many times have we sat around the table during a family gathering and said, “Gee, we should have written down those stories grandma used to tell. I would love for my children’s children to know and understand our family’s history.”
This is my why. The reason I started 2NDACTLIVES™. It starts with the passion of servant leadership, connected with what I know and linked to where I am in my current life.
So come along on the journey. It will be fun.
Let’s experience our Second Acts together.

I come from a family of story-tellers. Family tales told each time my extended clan gets together are comforting and familiar, like a classic rerun of a favorite old show. Some of the stories are sobering, others hilarious and still others border on legendary. All embellishments aside, these family stories have shaped my life, helped me learn where I came from and essentially, who I am.
In 2000, I helped my father write his memoir “The Team Behind the Barn and Other Memories”. This collection of stories and memories of my dad’s life growing up in Iowa in the ’30s and ‘40s is a treasure and wonderful legacy to our family. Since then, it’s become my passion to connect and bond generations through life stories and memoirs.
I was born and raised in Waverly, Iowa and received my degree in Journalism from the University of Iowa in 1981. I have been interviewing and writing in some capacity for 35 years.
I understand the great value of personal memoirs and have a high degree of interest, compassion and a deep respect for all life stories.
I have worked in the publishing industry for over 23 years, proofreading, writing and editing resources for churches.
I’m excited about editing material for 2NDACTLIVES™ and helping preserve memories of people’s lives through legacy narratives. I live in St. Louis, but enjoy traveling to national parks and beach-front locales every summer.
When I’m not proof-reading the latest 2NDACTLIVES™ masterpiece, I like to read, run, hike and explore local breweries.
Life is a daring and bold adventure. Enjoy the ride.
I have always been intrigued by words – how they are spelled, as well as how are they used. I am one of those folks that will spot a misspelled word on the TV crawl – it jumps out at me in a quick second! I have a degree in education with an emphasis in English and I spent a short period of time teaching, but quickly learned that typing words really fast was a better use of my skill set. I have spent the last 30 years transcribing legal and medical documents, and I still find it interesting “work.”
I am a Colorado native and continue to enjoy the sunny Colorado weather with the majestic Rocky Mountains in the background. As I approach my own “second act” of life, I have a growing appreciation of words – both written and spoken – and how they enrich our lives and preserve our memories.
Death and life are in the power of the word …
“Committed to enriching the retirement experience.”
