“There’s nothing quite as intense as …THAT MOMENT OF CLARITY…when you suddenly
see what’s really possible for you.”
Did you realize that next week we head into a new decade? What? I can hardly believe we are already 20 years into the newest millennium and are now off to the next ten. As the realization of how fast the days, months, years and now decades are zipping by, now would be a good time to readdress your future objectives, ambitions and motivations.
Clarity can include having an understanding of your purpose. What do you want to accomplish and why? What do you see yourself doing over the next 10 years? Beyond this statement of goals and objectives, give ample consideration to your motivation. As you ponder each, meditate on why this ambition is important to you. Are you doing this to improve yourself, your standing with your tribe, your family, or to have a positive impact on another or your community?
In the process, also give thought to the following questions:
Who am I? – By now, with all of your learned lessons, lived experiences, and developed skills, you should have a solid idea of your essence. What do you stand for? How do you want to be remembered? Also think about whether there is more you want to cultivate or sharpen. Goals should support who you are and have become. Personally, I might have a desire to test my hand as a baby boomer rap artist, but it just isn’t who I am.
What are my values? – Your direction should align with what you believe is important and right. It seems to me that attempting to accomplish anything meaningful should square up with your significant beliefs. You might want to complete a new values exercise just to see, as you have matured, if any of your important cornerstones has changed or evolved.
Know your present self as you begin to formalize your future self for your 2ND ACT LIFE.
In the process, take some alone time to sit and reflect. Grab a yellow pad, a pen and maybe a good cup of joe and begin writing out your thoughts. Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation or sentence structure. This is a stream of consciousness exercise. Just write down whatever comes to mind.
Once completed, set these ruminations aside for a couple of days and then return with a highlighter in hand. As you review your notes, mark those items that still resonate, as those will be the foundation of your future purpose-filled life.
Think back on how you celebrated the new millennia. Were you in the street with your neighbors shooting off fireworks? Did you revel in an Epicurious dinner with an expensive bottle of wine? Or did you hunker down at home waiting for the world to end? As mentioned, that was twenty years ago. Whatever you did I’m going to guess those memories are still vivid. It was a big event after all.
Those 20-year-old recollections are a good indication that time moves quickly and will appear to move even faster in the future. Don’t wait, don’t put this off to tomorrow, for tomorrow will come far too soon. Clarity is becoming even more important as the time we have left to make a positive impact is narrowing.
Enjoy your journey!
