“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.”
We all have values that have been shaped by our experiences in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Our values are also shaped by those around us: our family, the friends we spend time with, and our culture and environment.
Values are the strongly held beliefs about what is important in our lives. Values have a profound impact on us since they consciously and unconsciously drive our decisions and actions. Our values become our guides through life.
It’s important to identify your values so you can align them with your retirement objectives. Figuring out what is truly important to you and squaring these insights with your thoughts and activities will bring greater happiness and success to all areas of your life through authentic living.
Understanding your values also has the benefit of giving you something to talk to your grandchildren about. Use your knowledge of life and the bumps and bruises you experienced along the way to assist these little ones (if they are still little) on their life journeys.
Knowing your values will also assist you in living a life of purpose and meaning. As we discussed earlier, the pursuit of purpose and meaning will boost our feelings of happiness and contentment.
To get a good grasp on your personal values take a few moments and complete the Values Exercise. As you work through the checklist your thoughts on those items you value may be confirmed, or you may end up with an “aha” or two in the process.
“Values are like fingerprints. Nobodies are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.”
Enjoy your journey!
